Electronic apex locator: A useful tool for root canal treatment in the primary dentition

Author(s): A Katz, E Mass, A Kaufman
Journal: Journal of Dentistry for Children
Volume (number):
Month, Year: Nov-Dec 1996
Major topic: Pulp therapy – primary teeth
Minor topic(s): Pulpectomy
Type of Article: En Vitro Study
Main Purpose: Determine effectiveness of Root ZX in primary teeth
Overview of method of research: 20 freshly extracted primary molars were prepared, and pulp was extirpated using broaches. Root length was measured by placing a No. 20 file in each root until it emerged at the apex. Teeth were then placed in alginate, and measurements done with Root ZX in 3 environments – dry, saline, and 2.6% sodium hypochlorite. Each was measured 3 times in each of the respective 3 environments. Files were placed to average length derived, and radiographs were taken.
Findings: There were no statistically significant differences in measurement in each environment using each of the different measurements.
Key points/Summary: Root ZX – or other apex locators may be used to determine canal length for pulpectomy procedures.
Assessment of article: Pretty good – no big surprises. If apex locators work in permanent teeth in varying conditions, why wouldn’t the same be true in primary teeth?

  1. Hello,

The content was really very interesting. Electronic apex locator is used in dentistry to measure the distance between the root apex and endodontic needle. It helps to treat tooth good enough without X-rays. Thanks for all your hard work and the info you give.
